| G-90 |
|
A typical
coating weight for galvanized metal sheet.
Equates to 0.90 oz. (26 g) of zinc per square
foot, measured on both sides. |
| GABLE |
|
(1) The
upper portion of a sidewall that comes to
a triangular point at the ridge of a sloping
roof; (2) A triangular portion of the end
wall of a building directly under the slope
roof and above the eave line. |
| GABLE-SHAPED ROOF |
|
(1) A
type of roofing containing sloping planes
of the same pitch on each side of the ridge.
Contains a gable at each end; (2) A single
ridge roof that terminates at gable end(s).. |

| GALVALUME |
|
Trade
name for a coating, used over metal, that
is composed of aluminum zinc for corrosion
protection. |
| GALVANIC ACTION |
|
An electroylic
reaction between dissimilar metals in the
presence of an electrolyte. |
| GALVANIZED STEEL |
|
Steel
coated with zinc for corrosion resistance. |
| GAUGE |
|
A measurement
of metal thickness. |
| GEOTEXTILE |
|
A nonwoven
or tightly woven fabric used to restrict
the flow of the soil particles and other
contaminants while allowing water to pass
freely through; used for protection to keep
drainage systems from clogging. |
| GRAMBEL ROOF |
|
A type
of roof containing two sloping planes of
different pitch on each side of the ridge.
The lower plane has a steeper slope than
the upper. Contains a gable at each end. |
| GLASS FIBER FELT |
|
(1) Glass
fibers bonded into a sheet with resin and
suitable for impregnation in the manufacture
of bituminous waterproofing materials, roof
membranes, and shingle; (2) A sheet composed
of bonded glass fibers, suitable for impregnation
and coating in the manufacture of bituminous
roofing and waterproofing materials and
shingles; (3) A felt sheet in which glass
fibers are bonded into the felt sheet with
resin. They are suitable for impregnation
and coating. They are used in the manufacturer
and coating of waterproofing of bituminous
waterproofing materials, roof membranes
and shingles. |
| GLASS FIBER MAT |
|
(1) A
thin mat composed of glass fibers with or
without a binder; (2) A thin mat composed
of glass fibers, woven or non woven, with
or without a binder. This mat may serve
as reinforcement for certain roof materials
and membranes. |
| GLAZE COAT |
|
(1) The
top layer of asphalt on a smooth-surfaced
built up roof membrane; (2) A thin protective
coating of bitumen applied to the lower
plies or top ply of a built up roof membrane
when application of additional felts or
the flood coat and aggregate surfacing are
delayed. See FLOOD COAT. |

Grain |
| GRAIN |
|
(1) The
weight unit equal to 7/7000 lb.; used in
measuring atmospheric moisture content;
(2) A unit used to measure the mass of moisture. |
| GRANULES |
|
(1) Opaque,
natural, or synthetically colored aggregate
commonly used to surface cap sheets, shingles,
and other granule surfaced roof coverings;
(2) Natural or synthetic aggregate particles,
ranging in size from 500 um (1 um = 10-6
m) to 1/4" diameter, used to surface
cap sheets, asphalt shingles, and some cold-process
membranes; (3) Ceramic-coated colored crushed
rock that is applied to the exposed surface
of asphalt roofing products. Also referred
to as Mineral or Ceramic Granule. See MINERAL
GRANULES. |
| GRAVEL |
|
(1) Coarse,
granular aggregate, containing pieces approximately
5/8" to 1/2" in size and suitable
for use in aggregate surfacing on built-up
roofs; (2) Coarse, granular aggregate, with
pieces larger than sand grains, resulting
from the natural erosion or crushing of
rock, used as a protective surfacing or
ballast on roof systems. |
| GRAVELLING IN |
|
Embedding
aggregate surfacing into a built-up bituminous
membrane flood coat. |
| GRAVEL STOP |
|
(1) A
flanged device, frequently metallic, designed
to provide a continuous finished edge for
roofing materials and to prevent loose aggregate
from washing off the roof; (2) An upward
projecting edge along the eaves to stop
gravel from rolling or being washed off
the roof surface; (3) Flanged device, usually
metallic, with vertical projection above
the roof level, designed to prevent loose
aggregate from rolling or washing off the
roof and to provide a finished edge detail
for the roof; (4) A low profile upward projecting
metal edge flashing with a flange along
the roof side, usually formed from sheet
or extruded metal, installed along the perimeter
of a roof to provide a continuous finished
edge for roofing material. It acts a bitumen-stop
during mop application of hot bitumen along
a perimeter edge. |
| GROUNDWATER LEVEL |
|
At a particular
site, the level below which the subsoil
and rock masses of the earth are fully saturated
with water. |
| GROUT |
|
(1) A
mixture of cement, sand, and water used
to fill cracks and cavities in masonry;
(2) (Non-shrink): A cementitious material
used to fill pitch pans/pockets prior to
the application of a pourable sealer. |

| GUTTER |
|
(1) The
trough that channels water from the eaves
to the downspouts; (2) A channeled component
installed along the downslope perimeter
of a roof to convey runoff water from the
roof to the drain leaders or downspouts. |
